Last week the government put an end to the water emergency decree that had been hitting the country, with this, several doubts were generated regarding the government’s capacity to deal with the water crisis and the sudden decisions that had to be made, many times more expensive than expected or with time that could not be fulfilled. “They were taken insufficient measures, late, and that supposes a balance of mismanagement of the crisis by the government”, explained Ortuño.

On the other hand, he stressed the importance of giving entity to environmental problems since, although it was an exceptional circumstance that the Uruguay, the water supply is not guaranteed. “The first reflection that leaves us is that we have to give importance to environmental issues. The first conclusion is that the drinking water supply it is not insured for the majority of the country’s population. That depends on the fresh water reserves”, lamented Ortuño.
In this sense, he stressed that it is necessary to carry out national agreements to ensure long-term water supply as droughts will continue to occur. And, on the other hand, he stressed the importance of the measures to be taken are in time otherwise they end up being more expensive. “Works must be carried out to ensure fresh water reserves that allow drinking water to be provided to the population. The other great lesson is that you have to take action on time. If the works are done late, they end up costing more,” he explained.
A present that does not help
Regarding the need to generate a national consensus, Ortuño lamented that in the Accountability these premises were not taken into account. “Today, unfortunately, the news is still not good because we are not even in the OSE budget that was just voted fifteen days ago by us, nor in the Accountability, incorporating resources to carry out the necessary works”, detailed the Frente Amplista president.
Added to this was the fact that SBI it does not have the necessary resources to anticipate possible failures in the future. “OSE needs to significantly strengthen its crews to make repairs, we lost eleven hundred employees. The other side of what is coming, which is the election year, is the opportunity for the political agreements and commitments”, he remarked.
