The Deputies Finance Commission asked to modify the Imesi settlement for beer

The Treasury Commission deputies requested the Executive power modify the settlement Internal Specific Tax (imesi) to the beersince they ensure that it is being settled based on a fictitious value and not a real one, without considering the changes that the market has had in recent times.

The deputy of National Party (PN), Alvaro Viviano, explained that in recent months the entry of imported beers at a lower price has generated “conflicts” and “some problems” in the sector. “We believe that we have a competitiveness problem that affects the labor source and deserves to be analyzed,” Viviano pointed out.

Recently, the Finance Commission received some delegations linked to the beer sector that expressed their disagreement with the way in which the tax is liquidated.

During the month of May, deputies from the broad front (FA) presented a draft resolution requesting the Executive Power a resolution on the subject, or the change of the fictitious price used for the liquidation of Imesi.

Despite the insistence of legislators from both parties, up to now the Executive Power has not made any change in the fictitious price that was arranged.

Senator Gandini proposed maintaining Imesi’s exemption for water drums

The PN senator, Jorge Gandiniproposed that the Imesi exoneration be maintained in water drums of more than 5 liters after the end of the water emergency in Montevideo and the metropolitan area.

According to the nationalist legislator, the Imesi should only tax luxury goods, such as alcohol or cigarettes, but not table water, since it is a good for family consumption.

“Bottled water has two taxesVAT, like any product, and the Imesi,” said the white senator last week in dialogue with Telemundo, adding that “the Imesi is a tax that taxes luxury goods, taxes cigarettes, alcoholic beverages, soft drinks, vehicles, fuel”.

“It does not seem to make sense to tax bottled water in more than 5 liters,” he stressed. “Probably, one can say that a half-liter or 600 cc bottle is luxury, but the 5 or 6-liter can is for family consumption, it has been incorporated a lot into family spending,” Gandini commented.
