Fernando Mattos does not consider that Uruguayan dairy products harm Brazilian producers

The minister of Livestock, Agriculture and Fishing (MGAP), fernando mattosassured that Uruguayan dairy should not be considered as guilty of the situation that Brazilian producers are experiencing.

The words of the head of the MGAP took place in a meeting that he held today within the framework of the Expointer in the municipality of thisio (Porto Alegre, Brazil) with its peer from that country, Carlos Favaroof the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAP).

“The presence and incidence of Uruguay in the market of Brazil should not be pointed out about the situation that Brazilian producers are experiencing,” Mattos emphasized at the meeting.

In turn, he conveyed to the Brazilian delegation his concern about the delays that have been generated at border crossings for the export of dairy products of Uruguayan origin, something that is having an impact on costs and affecting commercial dynamics.

However, he acknowledged that the dairy is going through great challenges globally, since demand has decreased and prices have devalued in the international market. “We need all the players to be able to market,” he said.

About this, last week, the president of Conaprole, Gabriel Fernandeztold Radio Oriental that no one could “anticipate” the sharp price reduction made by the New Zealand company Fonterrathe world’s largest dairy exporter, for the 2023/2024 financial year.

On the other hand, Mattos recalled that “during the first semester, (Brazil) was the most attractive market for Uruguay and that helped Uruguayan producers to face a complex situation”, so “Uruguay understands the situation that Brazilian producers are going through”.

Brazil made a commitment with Uruguay to make the dairy business processes transparent

For his part, Minister Fávaro stressed the commitment of Brazil to make the dairy trade processes transparent, based on a joint effort with Uruguay that allows to strengthen the confidence between both nations.

Likewise, the Brazilian delegation proposed creating a space for technical cooperation between the two countries, in order to define joint processes and unify analysis criteria for the products traded between the two nations, in order to avoid delays and setbacks.
