Statistics Austria estimates that 97,000 elementary school students will experience their first day of school. That is 1.9 percent more than in the previous school year. Overall, the number of students is likely to increase by 0.9 percent to 1.15 million.
In Vienna, Lower Austria and Burgenland, school starts on Monday for 502,000 children and young people, 42,500 elementary school students in these three federal states will take a seat in the classroom for the first time. On September 11th, the 648,000 pupils in Carinthia, Upper Austria, Salzburg, Styria, Tyrol and Vorarlberg – including 54,500 “Taferl” class pupils – will also come to the end of their holidays or kindergarten days.
Increasing numbers of students in elementary schools
Increasing numbers of pupils are expected this time in elementary schools (plus 1.7 percent); Statistics Austria also expects an increase of just under or over one percent in the other types of compulsory school (secondary school, special school, polytechnic school). In the AHS it assumes an increase of 1.4 and in the vocational schools of 0.4 percent. Meanwhile, a decline of 0.5 percent is forecast for vocational schools and colleges.
Education Minister Martin Polaschek (ÖVP) again emphasized in a statement that every lesson could be held in the coming school year. He would like to thank all teachers for this.
