There were extensive traffic jams in the morning on one of Wels’ main traffic routes. At around 7:45 a.m., climate adhesives blocked the Hans-Sachs-Straße Osttangente intersection in the direction of the Wels Nord motorway exit and ramp.
Ten activists glued themselves to a zebra crossing. “We’re racing into climate hell. Off the gas,” read the banners holding up the climate stickers. The police were there quickly.

For a quarter of an hour, road users could not get through. A long backlog formed on Hans-Sachs-Strasse. Vehicles turned around on the Osttangente and were diverted via the B1.
“We are all for climate protection, but I have to open my business,” said a driver to the OÖN. Some drivers got out of their vehicles and waited, one kicked a placard out of a demonstrator’s hand. Otherwise the mood was calm. At 8:50 a.m., one lane was opened on the Osttangente.
Finished after 45 minutes
After three quarters of an hour, around 8:30 a.m., the meeting was broken up and Hans-Sachs-Strasse was reopened to traffic. Demonstrators were carried away by police and taped hands were removed from the roadway with solvent. At 08:35 both lanes were free to drive on again and the traffic jam slowly cleared.
Wels Deputy Mayor and Security Advisor Gerhard Kroiß (FPÖ) was there and thanked the police for the quick intervention. Kroiss showed no understanding for the action, blocking traffic brought “nothing at all”, as he told the OÖ Nachrichten.

wave of protests announced
The action in Wels is part of a nationwide wave of protests that the “Last Generation Austria” started on Monday. Activists also paralyzed early morning traffic in Vienna and Innsbruck. Schwarzbergplatz and Innsbruck’s Innstrasse were the first to be affected. Extensive traffic jams were the result. On Platform X (formerly Twitter), they also announced that they would protest at Kaiser-Josef-Platz in Graz.
