The German epidemiological body, the Instituto Robert Koch (RKI) also said that 294 more people died the day before from coronavirus, bringing the total to 98,274 since the start of the pandemic.
Infections have skyrocketed in Germany in recent weeks, especially among the unvaccinated.
Faced with this deteriorating situation, Health Minister Jens Spahn called not to be so strict about waiting at least six months to apply booster doses of the coronavirus vaccine.
In terms of incidence, the number of new cases per 100,000 residents in the past week on Tuesday marked another record of 312.4, the RKI said.
Regarding the hospital incidence – the number of patients admitted per 100,000 inhabitants – was 4.86.
The incidence of cases and the incidence in hospitals are key indicators for the authorities when deciding on new restrictions or measures to contain the disease.
The proportion of German residents fully vaccinated against the coronavirus has stagnated for weeks at around 67%.
Measures being debated include imposing the mandatory vaccination for workers in some sectors, including the health sector, without yet having an agreement between the three parties negotiating a future government coalition.
The debate precedes the vote that will be held next Thursday in the Bundestag (lower house of Parliament), which plans to approve the new measures prepared by Social Democrats, Liberals and Greens to replace, from November 25, those that were applied at the federal level in the framework of a state of emergency.
Parallel, the city of Munich canceled the Christmas market that each year attracts more than two million visitors due to the “exponential growth” of infections.
“It is bitter news” but “the dramatic situation in hospitals and the exponential growth in the number of infections leave me no alternative,” the mayor said in a statement.
Since the beginning of the pandemic, the RKI has tallied 5,077,124 Sars-CoV-2 infections tested, although the actual total number is likely much higher, as many cases go undetected.
The German President, Frank Walter Steinmeier, called on the population to be vaccinated, while the Bavarian Prime Minister, Markus Söder, said Covid would have ceased to be a problem in Germany if people had been vaccinated.
Bavaria is just the federal state where the highest number of new infections are occurring and Söder admitted that there is resistance from part of the population to the vaccine.
“We have various groups, some esoteric, some from the extreme right, who reject the vaccine. We have to insist on the information campaign to overcome resistance,” he admitted.
