Why was the discussion of the euthanasia project delayed?
After approval in the lower house, and with some modifications to the original proposal, the text went to the Senate, where from the beginning an even tighter debate was expected, with the public opposition of the National Party of the president Luis Lacalle Pou and of Town meeting.
In this context, there was a tie in the Health Commission, with the positive votes of the Frente Amplio legislators daniel olesker, Charles Carrera and Sandra Lazo; and the negative pronouncements of Guido Manini Rios by Open Town Hall, Carmen Asiain of the National Party and Carmen Sanguinetti for the Colorados, the last to decide against the project.
With these results, it was Niffouri who had to break the tie for and against, although he maintained that he had not yet made a decision. Meanwhile, he anticipated that the vote would remain for this year since the upper house’s priority was set on other projects such as the social security reform.
