The sum is to be collected in a test phase over 30 days, especially on public holidays and long weekends. The municipality announced that the exact days on which day tourists will be asked to pay will be published in the next few weeks.
The aim is to regulate the tourist rush. On certain days, over 100,000 tourists flock to the lagoon city. The booking system is to be tested in the next few weeks.
“We are aware of the urgency of finding a new balance between the rights of those who live, study or work in Venice and those who visit the city. That is why innovative management of traffic flows is required at certain times and on certain days that can curb day tourism,” commented the Municipality’s Tourism Officer, Simone Venturini.
According to Mayor Luigi Brugnaro, the money will primarily go into the maintenance and cleaning of the historic city. Venice has been fighting the influx of tourists for years and has tried various strategies to keep the crowds in check.
