AEBU confronts the PIT-CNT for the plebiscite against the social security reform

The Uruguayan Banking Association (AEBU) presented a document for the union leaders in which it establishes the risks that the plebiscite on the social security reform would generate, among which are the increase in the deficit in the system, eventual lawsuits against the state and what would affect the equity and justice in benefits.

The document, published by Underlined, will be sent to 48 unions that are part of the Expanded Representative Table of the PIT-CNT that this Thursday, supported by several unions, he will pronounce himself in the search for a signature that will allow him to carry out the plebiscite on the social security reform law.

What does AEBU warn?

In this sense, the main claims by the banking union have to do, in the first place, with the plebiscite “affects the equity and justice in various benefits” since the conditions promoted by the plebiscite allow future governments to “deteriorate the salary conditions of workers, impose worse retirement conditions for important sectors of retirees and will justify new regressive tax burdens”.

Therefore, AEBU establishes that the reform implies “the confiscation of savings, which belong to BPS affiliates” who are individual account holders and workers who join in the coming months. From the union, they emphasize that the plebiscite does not take into account a compensation for that confiscation.

In addition, from the union they established that the plebiscite “is promoted without analysis of the impacts on state resourcesthe feasibility of expanding other social policies such as health, education or housing and even other branches of social security, the effects on workers and retireesthe levels of injustice that it generates” and that it is not taken into account that it could generate negative impacts on the economy and the labor market.

On the other hand, they added that the project generates certain uncertainties, impacts on fundamental rights, at the same time that it dissolves private organizations and incorporates limitations to the social protection from some sectors. “It generates benefits that are not attached to the principles of justice, increases the deficit of the system and the police and military fund, and could generate trials against the State of incalculable amounts,” the statement noted.

The axes of the PIT-CNT plebiscite

Last week the union center reached an agreement to propose a single ballot for the plebiscite that it promotes against the social security reform.

In the recent document, he PIT-CNT It maintained that “individual savings systems for retirement purposes are prohibited,” in reference to the AFAPs, by establishing that they must end their activities within a maximum period of two years “from the entry into force of this reform.”

The ballot also proposes that the retirement age be 60 years and establishes that “no retirement or pension may be less than the value of the national minimum wage.” For abdala, it is about “defending a social security criterion that helps the redistribution of wealth”.
