“As we continue to make progress to defeat the covid-19 pandemic, we cannot ignore this epidemic of disappearances, which has affected families and communities across the country,” he added.
Between April 2020 and April 2021, in the midst of the Covid-19 coronavirus pandemic, the nation recorded 100,306 fatal overdoses.
This number represented a 28.5% increase over the same period of the previous year (78,056 deaths), according to provisional figures from the CDC.
“These overdoses are primarily caused by synthetic opiates, especially illegally manufactured fentanyl,” Deputy Director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Deb Houry told a news conference.
Likewise, the White House announced that it plans to improve access to naloxone, a drug capable of counteracting an overdose.
“It is time to face the fact that this crisis seems to be getting worse. We need to put all our hands to work,” said the Secretary of Health Xavier Becerra.
