The Greek clan of Toula is running out of comic strength

Still happy: Toula (Nia Vardalos) and Ian (John Corbett) (UPI)

When “My Big Fat Greek Wedding” was released in 2002, the film about Toula and her extended Greek family grossed hundreds of millions of dollars. Part two in 2016 also went well, but wasn’t quite as convincing.

Now “My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3 – Family Reunion” is starting in the cinema with well-known actors. Lead actor Nia Vardalos has brought many of the previous team back on board. She wrote the screenplay, directed and is Toula again, a few years older and still at Ian’s (John Corbett) side.

Toula wants to fulfill her late father’s last wish and travel to his hometown in Greece to meet three of his old friends. Of course the whole clan is there. With their eccentricities and family dynamics, everyone in the town creates a lot of commotion and many complications, of course also of a romantic nature.

Director Vardalos once again focuses on the chaos that the family causes with its wayward members. This may all seem loving and funny. But as the film progresses, it becomes clear that the situational comedy is not enough to fill the rather thin story with life and tension. The fact that the comedy sometimes seems more like an advertising video for the beauties of Greece doesn’t make it any better, it’s almost a bit embarrassing. (apa)
