Uruguay recovered clean electricity generation after the historic drought

Uruguay leaves behind the import of electrical energy from Brazilwhich characterized the worst months of the droughtand is one step away from covering almost all national consumption with electricity generated from renewable sources.

This was stated by the president of the state company joint venture (National Administration of Power Plants and Electric Transmissions of Uruguay), Silvia Emaldiduring the latest edition of Desayunos Útiles, organized by Somos Uruguay.

Uruguay is a pioneer in the incorporation of renewable energy sources, even in these three years of great drought we were able to reach very important production figures”, despite which it was sometimes necessary to resort to purchasing energy from Brazil and also activate the thermal power plants fueled with fuel of fossil origin, Emaldi indicated, after ensuring that “the levels recovered quickly” and that national consumption is close to being covered again with between 75 and 80 percent of electrical energy from renewable sources and, even, re-export surpluses.

The president of joint venture He highlighted that the national electricity system “satisfactorily covers current demand,” but new demands to produce green hydrogen will require doubling the current installed or contracted generation capacity.

“We plan to expand hydraulic generation, so important in the Uruguay“, for which it has been planned to renew the Rincón de Hydroelectric Power Plant Baygorrialocated between the departments of Peach and Black riverwith more than 60 years of life and for which it is planned to allocate some 60 million dollars until 2028, as well as continue maintaining the thermal power plants, which are the strongest supports of the national electrical system, in which some 44 million will be invested of dollars.

Added to this are other investments that will be made joint venture after receiving authorization from the Executive for the installation of two photovoltaic solar parksone of which will generate 25 megawatts on company land near the power plant. Tiger Pointin Saint Joseph, and another to produce about 75 megawatts to be located in the north of the country. “These are investments that will total about 100 million dollars and will be operational before the end of the mandate,” said Emaldi.
