Dachstein: A 58-year-old from the Salzburg-Land district went on a mountain tour to the Dachstein glacier, which he started at around 5 a.m. at the Vorderer Gosausee via the Adamekhütte. At an altitude of around 2,510 meters, at the beginning of the glacier, he went up to an altitude of around 2,600 meters and used the rock contours and stony passages on the glacier ice without any glacier equipment. He then decided to put on the crampons in the area of a small hollow in the ice. He suddenly slid 100 meters down the glacier ice and over a crevasse. The mountaineer came to rest in a meltwater gully in the ice that was about hip-width wide. He was still able to make an emergency call on his own.
An alpine police officer and two mountain rescuers were therefore flown onto the glacier by a police helicopter. The pilot was able to land near a crevasse, which allowed rescuers to quickly reach the injured man. He was already severely hypothermic and apparently injured. That’s why he was rescued with rope and flown to the Adamek hut. There the injured man was taken over by the “Christophorus 10” emergency medical helicopter and given medical care.
Big Thunderbird: Meanwhile, another call was received by the aviation police. A couple, a 33-year-old woman from Singapore and a 36-year-old acquaintance from India, both living in Manchester, England, wanted to climb the Intersport via ferrata on the Großer Donnerkogel. The two holidaymakers organized climbing equipment and took the Gosaukamm cable car up to the alpine area around 8.15 a.m. After a 20-minute climb, they reached the start of the via ferrata, which has a difficulty rating of C/D. After about half an hour, the two reached the first spot with difficulty C. The woman had strength problems in the vertical climbing spot and fell into the via ferrata set, which did not trigger, meaning the woman was uninjured.
After this incident, the two took a break for about an hour. Afterwards they decided to move on again. After a short time, the woman admitted that she was not up to the challenge because it was her first via ferrata. Her companion therefore called the emergency number. An alpine police officer and mountain rescuers organized the rescue of the uninjured. The police helicopter crew from Salzburg were able to rescue the exhausted woman and her companion from the via ferrata on the rope and drop them off at the Zwieselalm, where they were brought safely into the valley by other emergency services.
