Death toll from torrential rains in Spain rises to six

The Military Emergency Unit (UME) of Spain found the body of a woman today in the Spanish province of Toledo (center), which brings to six the number of deaths due to the torrential rains last weekend in Spain, reported the Civil Guard.

A UME dog found the body about 50 meters from the Vallehermoso River, near Valmojado, according to Antonia Requena, spokesperson for the Civil Guard.

“The dog of the Military Emergency Unit located 50 meters from the Vallehermoso stream the lifeless body of a woman, which was hidden among weeds and mud,” he told the press.

The victim’s car was found on Monday in poor condition, the AFP news agency reported.

After months of historic drought, Spain has been affected by torrential rains in recent days.

Search teams found the bodies of three men last Monday and two other dead men on Friday near the municipality of Aldea del Fresno, the site of the flooding of the Alberche River.

The rains affected the regions of Madrid and Castilla-La Mancha (center), where waterspouts occurred during the night of Sunday.

In Madrid, torrential rains caused the temporary closure of several metro lines.

Last Sunday, Madrid residents received an emergency alert on their mobile phones accompanied by a loud sound signal, unprecedented in Spain, inviting them to stay home.
