Vladimir Putin’s party wins local elections in occupied Ukrainian regions

The Russian Electoral Commission announced this Sunday that United Russiathe president’s party Vladimir Putin, won the local elections in the Ukrainian regions of Donetsk, Lugansk, Zaporizhzhia and Khersonannexed a year ago by Moscow.

Russia held regional and municipal elections this weekend in several territories of the country, including the four partially occupied Ukrainian regions.

Those elections, which were held between Friday and today in eastern and southern Ukraine, took place “dynamically, with few violations”according to the president of the Electoral Commission, Ella Pamfilova, reported the AFP news agency.

Most of the international community ignored those elections and argued that they were an attempt by Russia to legitimize the annexation of those territories.

In Moscow, the outgoing mayor, Sergei Sobyaninfrom Putin’s party, was the favorite to achieve his re-election.

Due to the imprisonment of some of the opposition leaders and the weakness of the opposition formations, no major surprises are expected in the elections.

This weekend’s elections represent the first elections to be held in Russia after the start of the invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
