A 50-year-old e-bike rider was hit by a railcar set on an unbarred railway crossing in southern Styria on Monday afternoon and suffered life-threatening injuries. The man from the Upper Styrian district of Murtal may have overlooked the approaching passenger train. He was flown to the LKH Graz by the crew of the Christophorus 12 rescue helicopter, the state police headquarters said. The train driver and the twelve passengers remained uninjured.
The man from Upper Styria and his wife were on their e-bikes on a municipal road in the direction of Mureck (Southeast Styria district) at around 1:20 p.m. At the railway crossing there, which was secured with a stop sign, the man may have overlooked the passenger train coming from the field. When he did notice the train, he braked his e-bike but came to a standstill on the tracks. The 29-year-old railcar driver immediately initiated emergency braking, but was no longer able to prevent a collision. The 50-year-old was hit and thrown into an adjacent meadow.
