At the age of 32, Dominik Wirlend wants to know it again. “I want to be number 10 in Austria,” says the tennis player from Attersee as his goal. He is currently ranked 17th. At the “11th Schwanenstädter Reifen NL Tennis Trophy” he did not come any closer to his goal. He clearly failed in the semifinals against the later triumphant David Pichler from Burgenland, who is currently in Wirlend’s desired tenth place.

Following the example of US Open champion Novak Djokovic, Dominik Wirlend has completely changed his diet. Since he started eating a vegan and gluten-free diet, his previous problems – his back in particular was always causing him problems – have practically disappeared. And there were immediate successes at tournament level: the 32-year-old triumphed at the Attnang-Puchheimer Open, made it to the semi-finals in Tragwein and Krems and at the Vienna State Championships, and made it to the final in Amstetten.

At the Tennis Trophy in Schwanenstadt, Dominik wanted to take the next step towards the top ten. He dominated his matches up until the semi-finals and had virtually no chance against David Pichler.

The No. 1 in the tournament suffered from a virus days before and was slightly handicapped as a result. But there was no sign of that on Sunday: the Burgenlander won 6-0 and 6-4 against Wirlend. Pichler then played the final against a regular guest in Schwanenstadt: Patrick Ofner, who has already triumphed three times at the UTC facility. But this time the series winner had no chance: the man from Eisenstadt whipped his shots into the opponent’s field too quickly and too precisely. Ofner, a defensive artist on the tennis court, couldn’t find a solution and had to accept a break and lose the first set 3:6. In the second sentence he couldn’t write at all.

“David played two classes better than me today,” Ofner had to admit after the match. “Everything really dawned on me today,” confirmed the Trophy winner. Even the edge of the net was on the Burgenlander’s side, who scored three lucky points with a net roller.
