A 65-year-old man from the Linz-Land district went on a mountain tour to the Goiserer Hütte around 9:30 a.m. yesterday, Monday, together with his 58-year-old friend, also from the Linz-Land district. The duo hiked from the Ramsau district over the Tiefen Scharte to the two Kalmberg peaks.
At an altitude of around 1,400 meters in the Tiefen Scharte area, the 65-year-old felt short of breath and increasing weakness, but was still able to climb independently to the summit area of the Niederer Kalmberg at an altitude of 1,827 meters.
When he reached the summit area, the 65-year-old was also plagued by cramps in his legs. It was no longer possible to ascend or descend independently, whereupon the 58-year-old companion made an emergency call at around 2:10 p.m.
The Bad Goisern mountain rescue service and an alpine police officer were ordered to the scene. In order to provide rapid assistance, the mountain rescue team requested the Martin 3 emergency medical helicopter. He was on site after a short time and provided initial care. The 65-year-old was then flown to the Salzkammergut Clinic in Bad Ischl. His 58-year-old companion was able to descend into the valley independently.
