The new multi-purpose strip on Herrenstrasse was completed yesterday. The red glowing section on both sides is not a real cycle path, but is intended to make cycling safer and more attractive. The model is Wiener Straße. “We can see very well that drivers do not drive on the strip and reduce their speed,” says Martin Hajart (VP), the deputy mayor responsible for traffic. A structural separation would not have been possible because otherwise the street space would have become too narrow for motorized traffic. When it comes to promoting cycling, you have to choose from a range, says Hajart. “Where possible, structural separations are the best. Where not, you have to think about something else.”

Compromise on loading zone

However, the multi-purpose strip has one flaw: it is interrupted at Herrenstrasse 48. There is a loading zone there, which was left at the request of the local optician – a compromise for Hajart. Pictograms are intended to alert cyclists to the interruption.

Praise and criticism from the cycling lobby

The Linz cycling lobby would have liked “more determination” on this point, says spokesman Thomas Hofer. In principle, the multi-purpose strip is a first step and a good thing. What is still missing is integration into the Herrenstrasse meeting area further north. There are two turning lanes there, one of which could be used for this.

Alternatives to the car

A total of six parking spaces had to be made way for the multi-purpose strip, which not all residents are happy about. “As a family with children and not a high income, we can’t simply afford an underground parking space,” writes a reader to the OÖN. Hajart knows the pressure on parking in the district and points out the need for collective garages. But you also have to offer alternatives to the car. “I expect hundreds of cyclists every day. It’s also about safety.”
