A 28-year-old passenger is said to have stabbed a taxi driver at least 20 times with knives in Breitenfurt near Vienna (Mödling district). However, the man’s condition is now stable.

The 28-year-old, who lives in Vienna, got into the taxi in Mödling around 4:30 a.m. on Monday. When he arrived at his destination in Breitenfurt, the suspect is said to have stabbed the driver several times and in a brutal manner with a knife – “suddenly and without any prior notice,” as it was said in a broadcast from the Lower Austria State Police Directorate.

Taxiler fought for his life

The 49-year-old first broke away and then held a rear door of the taxi closed to prevent the attacker from getting out. The 28-year-old is said to have continued to stab the man through the open window. After the Chechen left the car, he probably attacked the taxi driver again. The 49-year-old, who was fighting for his life, defended himself while lying on the ground and finally snatched the knife from the attacker.

The victim then got back into the taxi but was chased by the suspect. The 28-year-old is said to have used another knife that he had with him to stab him again through an open window pane. Despite the attacks, the driver finally drove off, but quickly left the road. The car remained on the right side of the vehicle. Now the attacker was back in the game – he stabbed the already seriously injured 49-year-old again and sprayed the man with pepper spray. The suspect then climbed into the car and stole the taxi driver’s backpack filled with food and drinks.

Emergency surgery after being released from the taxi

After the 28-year-old escaped, the victim called the police using the taxi’s SOS button. The man, who was already unconscious, was freed from the vehicle by the Breitenfurt fire department and, after receiving medical care, was taken to the UKH Meidling in Vienna for emergency surgery. Initially there was a danger to life. According to police reports, the 49-year-old has now woken up from a deep sleep. The health condition was described as stable.

A large-scale search for the perpetrator was initially negative. After further investigations and the discovery of various crime paraphernalia, the officers became aware of the 28-year-old. A new manhunt began on Tuesday evening, including police helicopters, drones and service dogs. The accused was discovered, but fled again. Ultimately, the Chechen was arrested in Mödling shortly after 4 a.m. on Wednesday. During questioning, he confessed to the robbery.
