LINZ. The area of responsibility of the water management employees of the Linz municipality is wide-ranging: it ranges from the assessment of construction processes to water supervision to commercial matters, especially in large-scale industry.
Climate change is also leaving its mark there: a few years ago the Danube was a maximum of 20 degrees warm in the summer, but now it is two to three degrees more, said Kurt Eberhardsteiner, head of the city’s water management, at a press event. This in turn has consequences for industry, which largely uses Danube water to cool its systems, which is later returned in a warmed state.
The warmer Danube water requires higher extraction volumes (“The cooling capacity is reduced by 30 percent”) and at the same time has negative effects on industrial processes and the overall temperature balance of the Danube. One problem that Eberhardsteiner mentions here is the colonization of mussels in the cooling systems or heat exchangers – which in turn makes increased cleaning activities necessary. One approach to breaking this cycle and reducing water consumption is to modernize systems, it goes on to say, and there is definitely potential to be exploited here.
For Climate City Councilor Eva Schobesberger (Greens), these developments underline how important the “climate-friendly” restructuring of the city is. Urban water resources must be protected and used sustainably. (jp)
