2023 will most likely be one of the warmest years in Austrian measurement history. This is shown by an interim balance from GeoSphere Austria, which was presented yesterday. This September is already notable for its above-average temperatures. “If October, November and December are similar to the average of the past ten years, 2023 will be one of the three warmest years in Austria’s 256-year measurement history,” says climatologist Alexander Orlik. “2023 confirms the trend towards an ever warmer climate. The 25 warmest years in measurement history almost exclusively include years from the recent past.”
September has already set records. Orlik referred, among other things, to temperature peaks in Alpine terrain: “Last weekend it was warmer on many of Austria’s mountains than ever before in September since measurements began.”
A cold front coming from west to east over Austria ended the extremely warm summer weather of recent days with rain showers and thunderstorms. By the weekend it will be quite sunny again and warmer than average with maximum temperatures of between 21 and 28 degrees.
