The former Wels city planning director Karl Pany was not granted more than five years of retirement. The 65-year-old suffered a sudden cardiac death while on vacation in Greece on Monday.
Pany joined the magistrate in 1989 as head of the building construction department, and from 2000 until his retirement in 2018, the Marchtrenker served as city planning director. During this time, the qualified architect was responsible for the local development concept, the evaluation of the zoning plans and several district development concepts.
As construction director, he was also responsible for the construction law and planning support of all important construction projects in Wels: These included several retirement homes, children’s education and care facilities and schools, the new exhibition halls 20 and 21, the university of applied sciences campus, the Welios Science Center and the Herminenhof cultural center. Pany’s career also included the opening of the “Welser Westspange” of the A8 Innkreis motorway, the first part of the expansion of the B1 Wiener Straße, the inner city traffic concept in 2005, the new Traun crossings at Trodat and Museumssteg, and the conversion of street lighting to LED as well as the redesign of the main station including the later construction of the parking deck.
“Dipl.-Ing. Karl Pany was an outstanding personality who, as building director, helped shape the appearance of the city for years,” said Mayor Andreas Rabl in tribute to the deceased. As a civil servant, he fulfilled his duties unselfishly and with a high level of expertise for the benefit of the people of Wels. “In his work, he was always solely committed to the city. Pany was deeply humane in his actions, solution-oriented and took on board the concerns of the citizens,” says Rabl.
Pany was, among other things, a member of the Austrian Association of Cities in the specialist committee for building matters and spatial planning, was involved in the Building Culture Council of the Republic of Austria and was a lecturer in civil engineering at the Wels University of Applied Sciences from 2015.
