After knife attack on taxi driver in Lower Austria: pre-trial detention imposed

The time limit initially runs until September 28th, said Birgit Borns, spokeswoman for the Wiener Neustadt regional court, on Thursday upon request. According to the public prosecutor’s office, the investigation is based on attempted murder, aggravated robbery and damage to property. The 49-year-old victim suffered at least 20 stab wounds.

The attack was carried out on Monday in the early hours of the morning at the end of a taxi ride to Breitenfurt. According to the police, the 28-year-old Chechen stabbed the driver “suddenly and without any prior notice.” The 49-year-old fought back and snatched the knife from the attacker. The accused is then said to have pulled out another stabbing weapon and injured the man again – the fight had meanwhile moved away from the vehicle.

The victim then got back into the taxi and drove off, but the car quickly left the road. Now the attacker was back in the game – he stabbed the already seriously injured 49-year-old again and sprayed him with pepper spray. The accused then climbed into the car and stole the taxi driver’s backpack filled with food and drinks.

The 49-year-old was initially in mortal danger and underwent emergency surgery at the UKH Meidling in Vienna. The man has now woken up from a deep sleep. The health condition was described by police as stable. The 28-year-old who confessed to the robbery was arrested on Wednesday morning after repeated searches.
