ORF: Ö3 and regional radios coordinate better

In January 2022, Ingrid Thurnher was appointed ORF radio director.

A concrete result of the new fleet strategy is that there will be regular coordination regarding the color of music between the ORF regional broadcasters and Ö3 in the future. The mix of entertainment and information should be retained on Ö3 and the station will continue to be “clearly” different from FM4.

“FM4 will focus even more on Austrian music than before and will focus even more on being a kind of launching pad for Austrian artists,” said the ORF radio director. The station should continue to focus on its strengths – such as the lives of young people – and not lose its typical sound. “But of course we want to show more breadth there too,” says the 61-year-old.

Podcast machine Ö1

At Ö1, audibility should be “promoted”. At the same time, the focus is also on delayed listening via the ORF sound player. The station is a “real podcast machine”.

With the amendment to the ORF law, the ORF will be allowed to produce programs “online only” from 2024. Work is underway on digital offerings for young people, said Thurnher, who regrets that the ORF is still not allowed to operate digital special-interest channels such as “a rock radio station.” The private station 88.6 in particular had recently increased its reach significantly with a focus on rock music.
