LINZ. Last year, trams in Vienna alone were blocked 1,535 times, preventing them from continuing their journey four times a day. A bus stop was parked 787 times. Tougher penalties are now intended to defuse the situation. Although this problem is also known in Linz, the extent of it cannot be compared to that in Vienna, as an OÖN query to Linz Linien shows. Traffic disruptions on Linz trams occur very rarely. “Less than ten every six months,” it says. Incidents currently only occur in bus or trolleybus operations – and mainly in bus lanes that are valid for a limited time and which may be used as parking areas by private transport outside these times.
The Linz Linien sees the reason for the low numbers in Linz in various measures, such as the relocation of parking spaces near the tracks or clear floor markings, which have significantly improved the situation in ongoing operations in recent years. If a driver happens to block a track or a bus lane, an attempt is made to alert or locate the driver nearby. If this is not possible within a reasonable time for public transport, towing will be arranged. The company did not want to reveal how often this is the case. Unlike in Vienna, Linz AG Linien does not charge any additional costs for the operational disruption in addition to the administrative fine and towing costs.
