Traffic calming has been an issue on Ferihumerstrasse several times, but there have been no major successes so far. At the end of May, the mobile barrier erected there became history for the second time.
Green planning spokesman Markus Rabengruber is now proposing to build a mixed traffic area in the area between Wildbergstrasse and Neuer Eisenbahnbrücke, where the separation between sidewalk and road is eliminated. In addition, only one lane instead of three will be available at the intersection with Wildbergstrasse and paving similar to that at the Goethe intersection will be installed.
“Signal effect” for drivers
“This would send a signal to car drivers that this is not a thoroughfare. At the same time, pedestrians and cyclists would have more space, the cramped situation at the Wildbergstrasse tram stop would be defused and overall safety would be increased,” says Rabengruber.
Vocational School 6 would also benefit from the implementation; it would have adequate forecourt space. Rabengruber also sees potential for improvements with the planned renovation of the Peuerbachschule; the residents should be included in the redesign process. The application will be voted on by the local council on September 21st.
