The fourth round of the German Bundesliga begins today (8:30 p.m., DAZN) with a summit meeting between defending champions FC Bayern and leaders Bayer Leverkusen. Both teams are still without a point loss – and are willing to extend their series. Who’s giving up? “I have a good feeling, big games like this are the best, I love them. What more could we want? A great match in a beautiful stadium against a top team,” said Leverkusen’s successful coach Xabi Alonso, who is already looking forward to it duel of the goalscorers.
Munich’s 100 million signing Harry Kane (three league goals) collides with Victor Boniface, the top scorer who already has four goals and two assists. Bayern are no strangers to certain desires for revenge, after all it was Leverkusen who finally plunged the record champions into crisis with a 2-1 home win in the most recent duel on March 19th. Afterwards there was talk of a bloodless performance – with the consequence that coach Julian Nagelsmann had to pack his bags. Thomas Tuchel took over.
The Nagelsmann in question is now on everyone’s lips again – as a top candidate to succeed Hansi Flick as national coach of the German national team. Now everything can happen pretty quickly. DFB sports director Rudi Völler, who looked after the team in the 2-1 win against France, has already contacted Nagelsmann’s advisor Volker Struth.
DFB Vice President Hans-Joachim Watzke, who will decide the team boss question together with DFB boss Bernd Neuendorf and Völler, asked FC Bayern about Nagelsmann in order to be on the safe side and possibly check out the transfer modalities. The Munich team, who transferred around 20 million to RB Leipzig for Nagelsmann in 2021, are apparently gracious and are releasing their ex-coach, who is under contract until 2026, free of charge.
According to the “Bild” newspaper, there are only two conditions from Bayern’s side: firstly, the implementation of a game between Bayern and the national team as promised by the DFB, secondly, the DFB’s complete assumption of Nagelsmann’s salary demands.
