The opening festival at Grandyplatz was well attended, the offering from more than ten market participants was not bad, the atmosphere was good with free beer, face painting and musical accompaniment: after years of effort, the Resthof district finally has a weekly market, every Wednesday from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m.

As cross-party “drivers” of this achievement, city councilor and market officer Evelyn Kattnigg (FP) and local councilor Rosa Hieß (SP) took the initiative together last autumn. Nevertheless, after this successful opening ceremony, a pale aftertaste remains. In the press releases of both parties the other is not mentioned with a syllable.
When asked, Kattnigg said there were suddenly disagreements on the part of the SP: “But I won’t say anything about that.” Hieß herself distributed the questionnaires about the market, but otherwise all the work was done by her and the magistrate team. In addition, the Resthof parish has promised support and also made the parish space available. “Politicians have no place in the market. It is important that people accept the offer well so that it continues to exist.”
There is no interpersonal problem, says Hieß: “But the group was angry because no one from the party was invited and not even the mayor.” The offering at the new weekly market itself isn’t bad, but “we definitely need more vegetables.”
Digitalization planned
An overview of the offerings not only at Resthofer, but at all Steyr weekly markets (Stadtplatz, Ennsleite and Münichholz) will soon also be available online. According to Kattnigg, the planned digitization could be completed as early as November: “Online orders should then also be possible for individual retailers.”
