The Wels trade fair director Robert Schneider drew a positive conclusion on Sunday: “The attendance on all three days was overwhelming. But I’ll be honest: we expected this given the good weather forecast.” The Wels folk festival is experiencing a revival, Schneider believes the Corona years have finally been overcome.
There was a heavy crowd on the site on Saturday. Attendance was record-breaking throughout the day. Entry into the festival tent had to be interrupted on Friday evening because the capacity of around 1,400 guests had been reached.
In the wine tasting room and in the wine village, the innkeepers had their hands full. “The rush lasted until just before midnight. People stood in rows of five and six in front of the bars”says Schneider.
Thorsten Aspetzberger, initiator of the “Blue Bar” in the wine tasting and one of more than 40 restaurateurs, can only confirm this impression: “We had excellent attendance from the test lighting onwards. The atmosphere on all three days was great.”
The army of police officers and securities experienced an almost non-violent folk festival. Two fights on Friday evening were quickly broken up by the security forces.

In the 31 rides in the open-air area, the cash registers rang busiest in the evening hours. “During the day it was too hot for the people in the amusement park”, regrets Ludwig Rieger. The Wels showman – he was represented at the folk festival with six rides – would like to see events in the future that last longer than three days. “So that the complex construction is worthwhile for us.”
Two folk festivals in 2024
The next Welser Volksfest will take place from April 5th to 7th, 2024 as part of the supporting program of Blühendes Österreich. At the next AgroTier in autumn next year there will be eight folk festivals again.
