LINZ. Since this season, the teams from the two national leagues have been obliged for the first time to let their previous reserve teams compete in a championship mode in the 2nd classes. With very few exceptions, no team has yet been really successful – which has now reignited the discussion that had already started before this rule was introduced. But the tenor has changed. While at the beginning the majority of clubs were rather negative about the project, they can now at least get used to it a little. “In terms of sport, it is certainly an upgrade. In times when you can hardly find any officials, the organizational effort is enormous”explains Alois Schwarz, sports director of the regional league east club Neuzeug.
Norbert Beham, the sporting director of the Landesliga West club Esternberg, sees it similarly. “I have always been an advocate of the reserve competition. Because of the willingness of the opponents, which is why we always play in front of the fighting team, we can live with that. From an organizational perspective, this would not be possible otherwise.”
Trust the team of the hour
The biggest surprise in the Regional League East is still SV Traun: against St. Florian (2:1) they achieved their sixth win in their seventh game. And that despite the fact that coach Markus Erbschwendtner’s team even had to play with ten men when the score was 0-1 from the 55th minute onwards. Nevertheless, the game could still be turned around. While Traun leads the East, Gmunden is at the forefront in the West: after the 3-0 win against Gschwandt, the leader is still undefeated.
