The man from Hallein fell about 30 meters over partly vertical terrain around 2:30 p.m. while descending from the Hochthron (Pongau), the Salzburg State Police Department said. He was left lying about 20 meters below in a field of rubble. His two companions alerted the rescue workers and tried to resuscitate him. But he died at the scene of the accident. The police helicopter flew the two into the valley, where they were looked after by a Red Cross crisis intervention team.
The accident occurred on the rope-insured “Thronleiter” climbing system at the foot of the mountain in the area of a rocky outcrop. The 75-year-old was experienced in mountaineering.
