There were 35 hot days and 19 tropical nights in Linz this summer. The hot days (more than 30 degrees) affect all parts of the city almost equally, but there are big differences on the tropical nights (not below 20 degrees). While only five tropical nights were recorded in Urfahr and Ebelsberg this year, there were 19 at the Otto Glöckel School near the Sacred Heart Church.

In addition to the Linz City station of Geosphere Austria, the city of Linz now operates six of its own measuring stations in order to better record the situation in the various city districts: The station at the Otto Glöckel School has the maximum of 19 tropical nights. There is dense development here, there is little green space and there is very limited ventilation in the district, according to the responsible city councilor Eva Schobesberger (Greens).

Ebelsberg and Dornach are the coolest

The station on the main square counted twelve tropical nights this year. “In contrast to the station at the Otto Glöckel School, night-time ventilation probably plays a role in the main square. This could be achieved through cold air outflows from the north, but better ventilation through the Danube air channel is also conceivable,” it says Analysis of the city of Linz.

The minimum values are in the Ebelsberg school (five), at the Rennerschule (seven) and in Dornach (five). Ebelsberg and Dornach are less sealed overall. Dornach benefits from cold air outflows at night, which have a cooling effect, and Ebelsberg is generally better ventilated, according to the evaluation.
