The Italian government has adopted a package of measures to combat illegal immigration. Accordingly, the detention of people who have immigrated irregularly to Italy can be extended to the maximum possible period of 18 months under European regulations. The government has also mandated the Ministry of Defense to set up additional centers for the deportation of migrants.
The centers should be built in places with low population densities that are easy to fence and monitor, said Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. Meloni wants to prevent conditions like those on the Mediterranean island of Lampedusa at all costs: it should not happen “further inconvenience and uncertainty in Italian cities” come, emphasized Meloni.
Next week the government also wants to address the issue of unaccompanied minors. “Our goal is to protect minors. We want to prevent that, as is now the case, everyone can be integrated into the reception systems intended for minors with a simple self-certification”emphasized Meloni.
How explosive the situation in Italy has become became clear again yesterday: there were chaotic conditions in the Sicilian port city of Porto Empedocle. Hundreds of migrants left the refugee facility at the port, where around a thousand people coming from Lampedusa are penned. Tensions arose because of the long waiting times to board buses that would take migrants to facilities in northern Italy. According to Italian media, security forces tried in vain to stop the people.
At the weekend, Meloni visited the refugee camp in Lampedusa together with EU Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen. Both were shocked.
