Boris Johnson traveled directly from the G20 meeting in Rome at the end of October, and arrived in Scotland – where the World Climate Conference was held until 12 November – on a plane chartered by the British government.
He also flew from there to London on a whirlwind overnight trip to return the next day.
After the criticism it generated, the conservative leader used the train, a less polluting means of transport, to return to the conference.
Glasgow, Scotland’s most populous city, is an hour’s flight from London, while the train journey takes about five hours.
“That (the plane ride) doesn’t send the right message.”, denounced Greta Thunberg, who traveled by train from Stockholm to attend COP26.
Aircraft and ship transportation create more pollution than some countries. If it were counted as a country, shipping would be 11th, while aviation would rank next.
Combined, these forms of transport generate the equivalent of the emissions of Japan, the fifth most polluting country on the planet.
