The “Future instead of highway construction” initiative sees the more than 200 test drillings currently underway on the lower Froschberg for the second section of the Westring motorway (A26) as a clear sign of the problematic geological situation in the area of the planned tunnel portals. Asfinag would try to find a way to “get the water-bearing marl layers under control” in the area of Ziegeleistrasse and Waldeggstrasse, said initiative spokesman Christian Trübenbach in a broadcast yesterday.
Having to permanently drain the water in the marl layers for the construction of the tunnel portals has ecological consequences for the Froschberg and the old trees in the brickworks and Bergschlössl Park.
“Standardized process”
As far as the costs and the construction schedule are concerned, according to Asfinag, there have been no changes due to the exploratory drilling that has already been carried out. The drilling along Waldeggstrasse would serve to create an updated waste management concept and would be a standardized process for larger construction projects. “The current exploratory drillings are unrelated to the technical challenges of executing the second stage of the A26,” said press spokesman Christoph Pollinger when asked by OÖN. The technical elaborations regarding groundwater or subsidence would be carried out in accordance with the existing notices from the EIA.
