The western Ukrainian city of Lemberg (Lviv), which plays a central role in military supplies, was also affected. As the state news agency Ukrinform reported, there were also explosions in the megacity of Kharkiv as well as in Kramatorsk, Sloviansk, Kherson, Odessa, Kryvyi Rih and Khmelnytskyi.
In Lviv, both Mayor Andriy Sadowy and regional governor Maksym Kosytskyi called on the population to stay in shelters as more attacks are expected. There has been an air alert in the western half of Ukraine since around 2 a.m. local time (1 a.m. CEST). According to local authorities, air defense systems in Lviv are busy repelling a Russian air attack. The warehouse of an industrial company caught fire as a result of a drone attack, said regional governor Kosyzkyj. A woman was rescued injured from the rubble of the building.
There had already been reports of Russian air strikes on the eastern city of Kharkiv on Monday evening. An industrial zone was hit there, Mayor Ihor Terekhov said shortly after midnight. “Kharkiv is being shelled by Russian missiles again,” he wrote on Telegram.
There were apparently also air strikes in the opposite direction. As the authorities in the southern Russian border region of Belgorod reported, the air defense was able to shoot down three “targets in the air” over the south of the region.
