432 beds are closed in Upper Austria’s hospitals

An APA broadcast surveyed the current situation in the federal states’ hospitals. As of August 31st, 432 beds were closed in the clinics of the Upper Austrian Health Holding – including Kepler University Hospital (KUK) Linz. However, at 3,623, 90 percent of the total beds were available.

The chairman of the works council of the KUK-Med campus particularly criticized the continued lack of relief for the staff. The emergency clinics are still being used heavily – even by “non-emergencies” without acute symptoms. “For example, at our Kepler University Hospital, out of 150 patients in the emergency room, only five had to be admitted as inpatients,” said OÖG spokeswoman Christine Dörfel. The others did not need hospital care.

Little change in the Vienna Health Association

In the houses of the Vienna Municipal Health Association (Wigev), little has changed compared to the summer. The personnel situation is tense, but planned operations do not have to be postponed to any great extent, Wigev said. In general, 949 beds are closed in the health network, compared to 5,492 so-called systemized beds. 936 beds are currently free (excluding AKH, note). A spokeswoman reported that they are preparing for the coming waves of infection.

Situation in Burgenland: tense, but no major problems

The personnel situation in Burgenland’s hospitals remains tense, but there are no major problems in operations. Operations can largely take place as planned both in the four health clinics in Burgenland and in the Hospital of the Brothers of Mercy in Eisenstadt. Medical Association President Christian Toth said that the situation had not completely relaxed, but had improved. Forecasts for the fall, including regarding the corona infection situation, are difficult, but: “I am cautiously optimistic,” said Toth.

Lower Austria: 3 percent of beds closed due to lack of staff

As of Tuesday, around 1,700 beds were free in the Lower Austrian state clinics, according to the State Health Agency (LGA). Three percent of the beds are closed due to a lack of staff, compared to 3.6 percent in April. There are location-specific differences in personnel requirements as well as shortages of subjects, “nevertheless we are currently recording a historic high in our medical and nursing staff in Lower Austria,” says the LGA. This can be attributed to extensive recruiting measures. “Never before have so many employees worked in Lower Austria’s clinics: 24,000, including almost 4,300 doctors.”

130 beds at Kärntner Kebag are not available

130 beds are closed in the buildings of the Carinthian hospital operator Kabeg. The main reasons are the tense personnel situation as well as vacation and sick leave, said spokeswoman Nathalie Trost. This makes it possible for planned interventions to be postponed: “Acute care is definitely guaranteed,” said Kabeg, as in the other federal states. The 130 closed beds compare to a total of 2,474. Kabeg central works council Ronald Rabitsch referred to a lack of staff: “At Kabeg, almost 50 positions shown in the staffing plan cannot currently be filled by qualified health and nursing staff.” Negotiations with the state of Carinthia are to begin soon – the main aim is to be competitive with other federal states when it comes to salaries.
