President Luis Lacalle Pou will participate today in the general Assembly of the United Nations Organization (UN) in NY, where he will give a speech within the framework of the 78th period of sessions and around the objectives set by the international organization regarding the “Agenda 2030”. The representative of Uruguay will speak around 7:15 p.m. as part of his diplomatic agenda in USA, which includes a meeting with the president Joe Biden and other heads of state.
On this occasion, the General Assembly meeting – which runs from today until September 23 – has as its motto “rebuilding trust and reactivating global solidarity.” Likewise, the meeting will seek to “accelerate action on the 2030 Agenda and its Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) towards peace, prosperity, progress and sustainability for all.” In short, share this year’s agenda regarding these topics and comment not only on the objectives of each country in terms of sustainable developmentbut also the achievements achieved in this matter.
President Lacalle Pou will give his speech with the conviction that Uruguay has advanced in the direction of the objectives outlined by the UN in the contents of the 2030 Agenda, and will reaffirm the country’s commitment to achieving the 17 objectives and goals set in 2015.
In the environment of the president – according to El País -, an intervention is planned with the usual discursive marks of the Uruguayan leader, asking take action and even questioning the UN about whether it really exists “political will” to move forward on this issue.
Likewise, and already knowing that the next meeting of the UN —which will be in September 2024, the last one he will attend Lacalle Pou in his mandate—he already has the name “Summit of the future”one of the possibilities is that the president proposes that next year concrete responses be presented to the challenges posed, with the north able to access solutions for the world population without restrictions.
On the other hand, the position of Uruguay that will defend Lacalle Pou It will be the same that it has had in the last meetings, bilateral and multilateral, every time it left its borders and this issue was the main topic: that the country has a path taken towards sustainable development and that even stands out in the matter.
Cosse complained about climate change
Also within the framework of the development of the General Assembly, the mayor of Montevideo, Carolina Cossespoke about the climate change and the social effect it has on populations in cities around the world, therefore, he asked to react quickly to this phenomenon.
The mayor spoke as president of the International Union of Cities and Local Governments, and during her speech she highlighted the importance of carrying out a cultural change in order to combat climate change. “I understand the enormous need for a cultural change to combat the climate change. For this cultural change, one of the best tools we have is to open the greatest possible participation to citizens,” Cosse established, although she stressed that this change must be gradual and careful “like a mother who loves her children.”
In that sense, he assured that it is important that they carry out quick actions. “You have to hurry, because the mayors in the world, when they see a beautiful rainy day to be at home, we see that thousands of people who live in settlements will have a tragic day,” the president noted.
Regarding this, the mayor contextualized the reality of Montevideo and many other cities in the world. “Reality is essentially local and every day local governments and cities make efforts to change reality,” Cosse explained.
At the end of her intervention in a kind of round table where the debate arose, the mayor insisted that “in the Union of Cities We have a pact: take care of people, take care of democracy and take care of planet”.
