The Prime Minister of Canada, Justin Trudeau, expressed his “deep concern” over the murder of Hardeep Singh Nijjar and made an emergency declaration before the House of Commons.

He Prime Minister of Canada, Justin Trudeauimplicated the government of the India in the murder of a Canadian religious leader British Columbia During last June: “Canada declared his deep concern to the Indian government’s top intelligence and security officials.”

“It is contrary to the fundamental rules by which free, open and democratic societies are conducted. I continue to ask very firmly that the government of India cooperate with Canada to shed light on this situation,” he added.

Hardeep Singh Nijjar is a reference for Sikhism, one of the youngest religions, founded by Guru Nanak and who believes in only one god. The individual, who had previously been charged with crimes of sedition, criminal conspiracy, promoting discord and various crimes related to the Unlawful Activities Lawwas shot dead outside a Sikh temple in Surrey, UK, last June 18.

Tension between the governments of India and Canada

Nijjar’s death caused diplomatic tension between both countries, leading to the suspension of talks by the Canadian government with its Indian counterpart for the signing of a free trade agreement.

According to the news agency Reuters, almost 1.8 million Indian people live in Canada and a little less than half belong to the Sikh religion.

Besides, the Canadian Foreign Minister Mélanie Jolyannounced yesterday the expulsion of a high-ranking Indian diplomat whom he defined as the head of the Indian intelligence agency in Canada:

“Allegations that a representative of a foreign government may have been involved in the murder of a Canadian citizen here in Canada, on Canadian soilare not only worrying, but completely unacceptable“.
