“In ‘Real Age’, Tonio Schachinger achieves the feat of being a coming-of-age novel that is both sensitive and subtle – stylistically brilliant, but never intrusive.” This is how the jury explained why they decided to put the novel by the Viennese, who was born in India in 1992, published in March, on the shortlist of the best six new publications for the German Book Prize.
A total of six of the original 20 longlist novels were nominated: The most prominent name on the list is Terézia Mora, who already won the book prize in 2013. The Hungarian-born author, who also works as a translator, is represented with “Muna or Half of Life”. The Berlin author Necati Öziri depicts German-Turkish realities in his debut “Vatermark”. In “The Possibility of Happiness” Anne Rabe tells of the migration from the vanished GDR to the West. With “Maman” Sylvie Schenk goes on a search for clues that leads to the life story of her mother, her family and her own roots. And Berliner Ulrike Sterblich’s “Drifter” is a bitter satire on the literary world, the PR industry, art, social media, stock managers and hero worship.
The German Book Prize will be awarded on October 16th at the start of the Frankfurt Book Fair.
