Card fever: women’s tournament heralds a new era for tarot women

At the Haudum in Helfenberg on September 30th only women will compete in tarot. Women have always been an integral part of the tarot tournaments in Helfenberg, and they are a permanent fixture at the Raiffeisen Tarock Cup. A separate tournament, which is reserved solely for the “Ladies of Creation”, will be held for the first time at the end of September.

As in all matters, there are nuances when playing cards that differentiate men and women. “Women play more carefully and think more carefully. Not all of them, but most of them,” says Peter Haudum, co-founder of the Tarock Cup and an experienced card dipper himself.

But anyone who believes that they can label women as bigger “squatters”, i.e. extremely cautious, even cowardly players, is wrong. The ladies are simply less inclined to gamble, they play with more tactics, analyze coldly and can expect to play their cards correctly. And yet, of the approximately 8,000 registered Tarot Cup players, only 1,200 are female – that should change.

Tarot fever is contagious

The first women’s tournament on September 30th should make a big contribution to this: “We hope for many new players who can already play tarot but may have never had the desire to take part in a tournament. You really don’t have to be a professional to to take part. It’s enough if you know the rules and have already played a few times,” invites Haudum.

But what makes a good tarot reader? Qualities such as good memory, strategic thinking and forward-looking tactics are required. But once tarot fever has bitten you, it remains chronic and is extremely contagious. The women’s tournament is of course played with our own women’s cards from Piatnik, which were originally used around 1900 and have now been reissued. They have a smaller format than usual tarot cards and are printed with previously used figures.

All participants can expect a welcome champagne, break snacks in the form of linseed oil potatoes or Gugelhupf, a ladies’ donation and 30 exclusive prizes: VIP tickets for the world-class women’s tennis tournament “Upper Austria Ladies 2024”, for example, or a tour of the Piatnik factory by the boss himself . Four ladies can win an exclusive breakfast at the keep of Piberstein Castle – served by former Vice Chancellor Reinhold Mitterlehner himself.

Small exhibition

A small tarot exhibition with old cards and utensils from the Piatnik company and from Peter Haudum’s private collection rounds off the tournament. The net proceeds go to a charitable cause. More information can be found at Gasthof Haudum on 07216/6248.

If you don’t dare to do it this year, there is a tarot course from the Helfenberger Club based on popular demand. The course is aimed at beginners and returners of all ages – male and female. The games are played eight times on Thursdays from 6 p.m. in the Gasthaus Haudum. The start is on October 5th. The course is led by Rudolf Anzinger together with Reinhold Mitterlehner, Peter Haudum and Werner Pamminger.

“We have set ourselves the goal of promoting social tarot playing in the region again. Everyone is therefore warmly invited,” says Haudum. The cost: Ten euros per evening. Registrations are also accepted at the Gasthof Haudum.
