When she wanted to cross the Ringstrasse from Wipplingerstrasse in her car on the evening of September 13, 2022, a 26-year-old crashed into her vehicle with his Mercedes. The man had clearly exceeded the maximum permitted speed of 50 km/h. The public prosecutor has now filed charges in the case.
Difficult road and visibility conditions
As authority spokeswoman Judith Ziska announced in response to an APA request, a criminal complaint for gross negligent homicide was filed with the state criminal court. Original suspicions that the 26-year-old might have been in a race with another road user were quickly refuted – however, the report obtained showed that the man was traveling at a speed that was not appropriate for the visibility and road conditions.
The driver remained uninjured
The 26-year-old was a tourist in Vienna at the time of the accident. Born in Syria, he lives in Belgium and has been running a successful restaurant there since 2014. While the 48-year-old was trapped in her badly damaged vehicle and had to be rescued by the professional fire department using hydraulic equipment, the 26-year-old remained uninjured. After receiving emergency medical care from emergency medical services, the woman was taken to the trauma room of a hospital, where she succumbed to her serious injuries.
There is already a date for the main hearing. As court spokeswoman Christina Salzborn explained in response to an APA request, the trial will take place on November 9th. If found guilty, the defendant faces up to three years in prison.
