The background was the school’s dress code, the mother had described it as “fascist”, whereupon the school association terminated the contract, a member of the association confirmed a corresponding report in the “Kleine Zeitung” on Wednesday.
The trigger was a letter from the school to the parents, which stated, among other things, that when attending school, care should be taken to wear “proper” clothing: no cropped T-shirts, no tops with spaghetti straps, no leggings and no skirts or trousers that are too short ( “not shorter than a hand’s width above the knee”). The mother mentioned described this as “patriarchal behavior” and a “suppression of feminism,” which the school left uncommented on. “The mother then followed up in a parent chat, described the dress code as fascist and called on other parents not to follow the rules with their children,” the school association said.
“Fascist dress code”
Reason enough for the school operators to terminate the school contract with the girl: “The mutual trust has been disrupted too much.” Even an apology from the mother didn’t change that. The school association is aware that the student is the victim of the case: “And we are sorry for that too. But in this case the child has to bear the consequences for the mother’s actions.” Incidentally, the twelve-year-old always adhered to the dress code. And in general there is no resistance to the dress code among students or other parents.
The case also called on the state councilor responsible for education, Daniel Fellner (SPÖ), on Wednesday: “I would like to point out that there is only one loser in this entire discussion: the student who is separated from her classmates at the start of school .” He expects “that the adults will act as role models and show the students how conflicts can be resolved: in a joint conversation at the same table.” However, the fronts seem to have hardened, as the school association says – the mother has also been threatened with legal action if she continues to speak publicly about a “fascist dress code”. As the Carinthian Education Directorate informed the school, a place had already been found for the girl at another school.
