RSV vaccine available for pregnant women and the elderly

Now at least expectant mothers can be vaccinated and their baby will be protected for six months after birth, it was said at a press conference in Vienna. The vaccination has to be paid for privately and costs around 275 euros.

In addition to older age, risk factors for a severe course in adults include lung and cardiovascular diseases, diabetes and a weak immune system, explained Arshang Valipour, head of the department of pulmonology at the Floridsdorf Clinic in Vienna. After surviving an infection, seniors also have an increased risk of heart attacks and strokes.

The risk group primarily includes infants. The first contact with the virus happens “very, very early, but does not protect against further infections,” says virologist Monika Redlberger-Fritz from MedUni Vienna. Around eight out of ten babies develop it within the first year of life. Children are currently given medication for prevention, but there is no vaccine for them yet. Symptoms include a runny nose, cough, sore throat and fever.
