The position, which commits its 24 congressmen, gives a vital impulse to the solitary proposal of the conservative congresswoman Patricia Chirinos, who had exhorted yesterday to gather the 26 signatures necessary to make possible what is usually called a “soft coup”, in this case against Castillo.
Shortly before the announcement, the far-right Renovación Popular party also made public its support with its nine congressmen, local media and the AFP news agency reported.
The possible dismissal of Castillo was put to consideration from the day after his election, when the right-wing parties questioned his victory to shouts of fraud despite the endorsement of the results by electoral authorities and international observers from the OAS and the European Union.
Castillo, a rural teacher and trade unionist, prevailed by a narrow margin of 44,000 votes in the June ballot over Fujimori.
“There is a sector of Congress that has decided to push the vacancy,” analyst Jeffrey Radzinski was quoted as saying by La República newspaper.
Meanwhile, the leftist leader Verónika Mendoza, who is a member of the ruling coalition, recalled that “from day one of the president’s government they began to talk about a vacancy.”
Castillo, who took office on July 28 and whose term ends in July 2026, is criticized for his lack of direction and constant ministerial ramblings.
In less than 120 days of administration, he changed a dozen ministers and the ruling Peru Libre party, which is the first minority in Congress with 37 votes, has been divided.
The impeachment request needs the support of 26 legislators to be presented to the plenary session of Congress, but then 40% of the votes in favor are required among the attending congressmen to bring it to debate.
To remove the president, 87 votes are needed out of a total of 130 parliamentarians.
In November 2020, President Martín Vizcarra was stripped of power in an express process in Congress and in March 2018 Pedro Pablo Kuczysnki resigned from the presidency on the eve of a second impeachment attempt after succeeding in one in December 2017.
