The tourism vocational school in Altmünster has taken a significant step towards sustainability by reducing plastic waste while supporting regional economic development. From now on, PET bottles in school buildings are history. The plastic containers are replaced by environmentally friendly glass bottles.

The decision to say goodbye to plastic bottles was made in order to minimize the school’s environmental impact, reports headmaster Armin Lenz, adding: “Before this school year, around five bags of plastic bottles were disposed of every day.” The step towards sustainability was made possible by the purchase of two modern drinks vending machines, which were 100 percent manufactured in Austria. The syrup used for the drinks is also made entirely in Austria. According to Lenz, the introduction of the glass bottles is clear evidence of the Altmünster vocational school’s commitment to environmental protection and supporting the local economy: “Our school not only sets an example against plastic waste, but also contributes to the promotion of environmentally friendly and regional products. We are proud to be able to offer our students a sustainable and healthy alternative to plastic bottles.” It is now hoped that this initiative will encourage not only students but also other educational institutions to take sustainable measures and actively contribute to reducing plastic waste.
