In order to reduce the traffic load on Urfahraner Hauptstrasse, traffic officer Vice Mayor Martin Hajart (VP) is considering redesigning Hinsenkampplatz and reorganizing traffic in the Rudolfjunction area as a central measure.
Currently, cars coming from Puchenau and heading towards JKU would have to “avoid” via Kaarstraße and Urfahraner Hauptstraße; driving straight ahead via Rudolfstraße is not possible. Hajart wants to change that. In the future, this section of Rudolfstrasse should be accessible in both directions, and traffic towards the university would then flow via Ferihumerstrasse and Wildbergstrasse.
“We want to make the most of the opportunity presented by the light rail and the Westring Bridge. That’s why we’re trying to find the ideal solution together with the state,” says Hajart. Microsimulations for the intersections are currently running. Their results should provide the basis for the redesigns.
The aim must be to get traffic out of the main street; only then can “real” attractiveness measures be implemented there, says Hajart. A meeting zone cannot function optimally when there is heavy traffic.
A partial meeting zone in 2025?
Hajart can also imagine converting a section of the main street, specifically in the section between Reindlstrasse and Blossomstrasse, into a meeting zone “in the near future”. Although time is relative here, when asked, Hajart names 2025 as the potential implementation period. The redesign (keyword greening) requires coordination with the other political groups, and a budget must also be decided and approved by the local council.
The 500,000 euros originally budgeted in the 2022/23 double budget for making Urfahraner Hauptstrasse more attractive were used in other projects, says Hajart, and they simply weren’t ready to actually work on the main street yet.
“Let’s look at the plans”
Infrastructure and Transport State Councilor Günther Steinkellner (FP) comments on Hajart’s initiative with the words: “We are looking at the state capital’s plans; technical consultations will follow, in which the state’s experts will be happy to provide their expertise.”
Steinkellner also points to the attractiveness of the Nibelungen Bridge, which will become a reality with the opening of the new Westring Bridge in autumn 2024. As reported, with the opening of the West Ring Bridge to traffic on the Nibelungen Bridge, one lane will be opened up for cyclists in each direction of travel. An evaluation of the pilot test is planned.
