KI: Workshops, service point, labeling requirement

The AI ​​(“Artificial Intelligence”) Act of the EU comes into force. The legislation, the final details of which are being worked on, is intended to govern and regulate the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in the EU.

Austria wants to be prepared for this, says Digitization State Secretary Florian Tursky (VP). Yesterday he presented a package of measures intended to make Austria AI-fit. “It is important to me not to wait for the EU’s AI Act, but to do valuable preparatory work”says Tursky.

The measures presented yesterday include the establishment of an AI service point at Rundfunk und Telekom Regels-GmbH (RTR). This is intended to serve as a contact point for private individuals and companies with questions about the use of AI, for example in companies. The service center will subsequently become an authority for artificial intelligence. This should then organize the certification and market monitoring of AI applications – depending on the regulations in the EU AI Act.

Workshops for the population

There will be training for public bodies – including schools and the police – Tursky announced. With generally accessible workshops, everyone in Austria who is interested in the topic should have the opportunity to “AI basic knowledge” to get.

These workshops are intended as part of the “Digital competence offensive” of the federal ministries. The first 800 workshops in many Austrian communities will start in October. Tursky hopes this will result in increased confidence in new technologies as well as broader knowledge of the opportunities and risks of artificial intelligence.

There will also be a labeling requirement for AI systems, but initially only in the public sector. All federal AI systems are to be labeled compulsorily this year. This applies, among other things, to chatbots. Further measures are planned in all areas once the European regulation is available. “Where artificial intelligence is used and corresponds to the risk levels of the AI ​​Act, there will have to be labels”says Tursky.

The creation of an AI monitor also examines the effects of artificial intelligence on society, companies and consumers. The AI ​​Monitor data is made public on digitalaustria.gv.at

The federal government’s AI strategy is also being revised.

Criticism came from the Neos yesterday. Preparatory work is good, said Neos digitization spokesman Douglas Hoyos. However, it does not make sense for Tursky to introduce a labeling requirement before there is a Europe-wide regulation.
