Luis Lacalle Pou will meet with Joe Biden in November

Luis Lacalle Pou was invited for the month of November to the White House to hold a bilateral meeting with the president of United States, Joe Bidenwith the aim of advancing the negotiations for a regional economic agreement that includes the Uruguay.

President Luis Lacalle Pou was in the American city of New Yorkspecifically in the general Assembly of the United Nations – the most important body of the United Nations Organization (UN) – when he had the bad news that he was not going to have a meeting with Joe Biden.

At the end of the general Assembly, the leaders of the countries participating in the event were going to be able to have a toast with the American president. However, due to a delay in schedules, the meeting finally did not take place. Although it was not all bad news for Lacalle Pou who received an invitation from the White House to have a meeting with Joe Biden on November 3, according to Montevideo Portal.

The objective of the meeting is to advance the Alliance for the Economic Prosperity of the Americas (APEP according to its acronym in English) which is based on an economic agreement that seeks to promote the economy of different countries in the region. In addition to Uruguaythe list is made up of Peru, Panama, Mexico, Dominican Republic, Colombia, Ecuador, Barbados, Canada and Costa Rica. A no less important fact is that our country is the only member of the Mercosur who was invited to participate.

The surprising previous meeting with Biden

The Uruguayan president, who had traveled to the United States to receive an award from the Americas Society-Council of the Americas, had a surprising meeting with President Joe Biden in the month of June, which lasted for more than an hour in the White House.

The meeting, which was not on the agenda, served to demonstrate the great interest of Washington in deepening diplomatic and commercial relations with the country. It came hours after a bipartisan group of senators proposed a bill for a strategic alliance between both countries.

According to the White House, President Joe Biden “praised Uruguay as a regional and global model of democratic governance” during the meeting.
